Virginia offers online voter registration. You can register by mail to vote in Virginia by printing a voter registration form, filling it out, and mailing it to your local election office. You can also register to vote in person if you prefer.

Abroad and military voters

The Federal Voting Assistance Program lets you register to vote and request an absentee ballot if you are a:

  • U.S. citizen living outside the U.S.
  • Service member stationed abroad
  • Spouse or eligible family member of a service member stationed abroad

What documents do you need to register to vote?

In most cases, you will need either a driver’s license or a state ID to register to vote. If you do not have either of these, you may be able to provide other types of documentation, including a bank statement or utility bill. But the required documents you need to register vary by state. Check with your state’s election office to find out what documentation they accept.

What are the Requirements to Register Online?

  • Have a valid Virginia DMV driver's license or state ID card.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be a resident of Virginia.
  • Be 18 years old on or before the next general election
    (if you are 17, you can still register and vote in elections if you will be 18 on or before the next general election).
  • Be qualified to preregister to vote by being at least 16 years old but not 18 years of age on or before the day of the next general election.
    (Please note that preregistered individuals are not entitled to vote.)
  • Not currently convicted of a felony or judged as mentally incapacitated and disqualified to vote.
